How solar and battery rebates work in Victoria
Solar panel rebate and interest-free loan
Through the Solar Homes Program, Solar Victoria offers eligible owner-occupiers a rebate of up to $1,400 on a solar panel system (up to 50% of the cost after other discounts), plus an optional interest-free loan of up to $1,400 repaid over four years. From 1 July 2026 the combined taxable income of all owners must be less than $150,000 a year and the property must be valued under $3 million.
Apply before you install
You need a written quote from a Solar Victoria authorised retailer using eligible products, network pre-approval to connect, and confirmation of your eligibility before installation. Installation then needs to happen within 120 days (270 days for homes under construction).
Hot water rebate
Eligible owner-occupiers can receive up to $1,000 towards a heat pump or solar hot water system, or up to $1,400 for eligible locally made products. The system being replaced must be at least three years old, and Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts may also apply.
Federal battery discount
The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides an upfront discount on new batteries between 5 and 100 kWh that are installed with solar and connected to a virtual-power-plant-capable inverter. Only one battery per premises can claim it, and since 1 May 2026 the discount tapers above 14 kWh.

Who is eligible for the Solar Victoria solar panel rebate?
Owner-occupiers (including owners of homes under construction) may be eligible if the combined taxable income of all owners is less than $150,000 a year, the property is valued under $3 million, the address hasn't received a Solar Homes solar panel or battery rebate before, and no solar system has been installed there in the last 10 years. Rental providers have a separate rebate.
Is there a solar battery rebate in Victoria in 2026?
Solar Victoria's battery loans closed in May 2025. Victorians can use the Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program instead, which gives an upfront discount on eligible batteries installed with solar. Since 1 May 2026 the discount tapers for larger batteries, and it reduces every six months until 2030.
Can I combine the Solar Victoria rebate with the federal STC discount?
Yes. Most new solar systems create Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which your installer takes off the price. The Solar Victoria rebate is then calculated on the remaining cost, up to 50% to a maximum of $1,400.
Do I need approval before installing?
Yes. For the solar panel rebate, your quote must come from a Solar Victoria authorised retailer and your eligibility must be confirmed before installation. Systems installed before approval don't receive the rebate. Emergency hot water replacements are the main exception.
